HARVEST THANKS WORSHIP TRADITION

HARVEST THANKS WORSHIP TRADITION

at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church

September 29, 2024
(Oktoberfest Sunday in Lovettsville)

The Erntedank (Harvest Thanks, in German), was a liturgical tradition long before the original Munich Oktoberfest in 1810, whose timing coincided with autumn harvest thanksgiving activities.

The Harvest Thanks worship will include members of Zion Lutheran and Bethel Lutheran (who, together with NJLC, formerly were the single Lutheran parish in the German Settlement) and also by members of St. James UCC (formerly called the German Reformed Church), truly representing the German origins of Lovettsville.

The Harvest Thanks worship at NJLC will be followed by a potluck Frühschoppen, a meal of wursts (sausages), pretzels, and other food associated with Oktoberfest. Frühschoppen is a German and Austrian tradition of a brunch, usually on Sundays after worship, in which friends and family gather to visit over the brunch meal.
