Spannaus, the vice-president of the Lovettsville Historical Society, was nominated for the Commission position by Catoctin District Supervisor Geary Higgins on May 1.<\/p>\n<p>According to its by-laws, \u201cThe Loudoun County Heritage Commission shall support and encourage the identification, documentation, protection, preservation, and celebration of the Heritage Resources of Loudoun County, [and] shall advise the Board of Supervisors and other County offices regarding Heritage Resources\u2026.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 One of its current responsibilities is the Courthouse Grounds Research Project, to evaluate the historic significance of the Courthouse grounds and its statues \u2013 including the Confederate soldier statue \u2013 and to determine if additional monuments or interpretative markers would be appropriate to fully reflect the history of the County and all its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Spannaus has been deeply involved in research, writing, and education concerning local history for many years. He was instrumental in obtaining <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/index.php\/local-history\/houses-of-lovettsville\/lovettsville-historic-district-listed-on-the-national-register-of-historic-places\/\">state and federal Historic District designation for Lovettsville<\/a> in 2012, and also participated in the design and placement of Lovettsville\u2019s two Civil War Trails markers, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/index.php\/lovettsville-civil-war-trail-marker-union-gateway-to-virginia-dedication-ceremony-2013\/\">&#8220;Union Gateway to Virginia&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/index.php\/civil-war-reenactment\/\">&#8220;The Loudoun Rangers.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0 He has served on the Board of Directors of the Lovettsville Historical Society since 2007, and he coordinates its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/index.php\/events-lectures\/\">renowned monthly lecture series<\/a>.
