Why is such a stately building located on what was known as the \u201cback street,\u201d where it stands out at\u00a0so\u00a0architecturally distinctive? Is it because it was\u00a0actually\u00a0built before the rest of the surrounding buildings?\u00a0Was it originally set back from the colonial road which became\u00a0Lovettsville\u2019s Main Street or \u201cfront street,\u201d today known as Broad Way? Could Willard Hall have been built before the American Revolution, as some people have\u00a0thought?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These questions will be explored by\u00a0Cookie Anagnoson,\u00a0the present owner of Willard Hall, who has been researching the history of her home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mike Zapf of the Lovettsville Historical Society will supplement Ms. Anagnoson\u2019s presentation, with remarks about Dr. James Willard, the building\u2019s namesake who\u00a0purchased it in 1868.\u00a0Dr. James Willard\u00a0was\u00a0an Army surgeon\u00a0during the Civil War\u00a0who served with the 13th\u00a0Maryland Infantry\u00a0Regiment\u00a0(USA), also known as the\u00a0Potomac Home Brigade,\u00a0and was in charge of the Union Army\u2019s general field hospital at Sandy Hook, MD for a period of time.\u00a0He lived at Willard Hall until his death in\u00a01906, and served northern Loudoun County as a physician.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Zapf has been studying Dr. Willard\u2019s journals which he kept during the Civil War, and which are now in the possession of the Lovettsville Historical Society. In his\u00a0journals, Dr. Willard discussed not only military affairs, but a broad range of historical, religious, and social questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The lecture will be held at\u00a0St. James United Church of Christ, 10 East Broad Way,\u00a0Lovettsville, VA 20180.
