{"id":6859,"date":"2025-07-29T21:24:34","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T01:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/?p=6859"},"modified":"2025-07-29T21:24:35","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T01:24:35","slug":"next-in-the-lovettsville-historical-societys-2025-lecture-series-august-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/index.php\/next-in-the-lovettsville-historical-societys-2025-lecture-series-august-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Next in the Lovettsville Historical Society&#8217;s 2025 Lecture Series (August 2025)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Lovettsville\u2019s Historic District: A Well-Kept Secret<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Presented by Maral Kalbian<\/strong><br><strong>Architectural Historian<\/strong><br>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Sunday, August 17, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.<br>St. James United Church of Christ,<br>10 East Broad Way, Lovettsville<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know?&nbsp; Since 2012, Lovettsville has had an Historic District which is officially registered on the National Register of Historic Places, and on the Virginia Landmarks Register.<br><br>On Sunday, August 17, you will have the opportunity to learn all about it, as architectural historian Maral Kalbian will give her first public presentation on the Historic District, for which she prepared the application in 2010-2011.<br><br>The 2011 application included a detailed survey and inventory of all the historic properties in the Town of Lovettsville, as well as two church and cemetery properties that lie outside the Town\u2019s boundaries, but which long predate the Town and were an integral part of the \u201cGerman Settlement,\u201d as this community was formerly known.<br><br>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/us8.mailchimp.com\/mctx\/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dhr.virginia.gov%2Fhistoric-registers%2F255-5001%2F&amp;xid=aa1efecd5f&amp;uid=32162734&amp;iid=2e9fa5c575&amp;pool=cts&amp;v=2&amp;c=1753819414&amp;h=d945b799594fde8b87192efe3619fd8a0119dbb9f57b8b07a5583ba28fc6072a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">application<\/a>, including Ms. Kalbian\u2019s survey, was submitted to the National Park Service\u2019s National Register of Historic Places, which approved the application in mid-2012, as did the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lovettsville Historic District consists of about 90 acres and contains 111 properties which make up the core of the Town as it existed in the mid-20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century.\u00a0 With outbuildings, etc., there are 181 \u201ccontributing\u201d structures or features which are regarded as being of historic significance.<br><br>Do you have questions about Lovettsville\u2019s oldest buildings? Kalbian, is an architectural historian and historic preservation specialist who has practiced in the Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont of Virginia for 37 years. She researches, evaluates, and documents historic architecture for a variety of public and private clients, including several local governments. \u00a0She has completed more than 50 historic district and 40 individual National Register nominations, including the Lovettsville Historic District in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of Ms. Kalbian&#8217;s publications include:&nbsp;<em>Clarke County, Virginia: History through Architecture; Frederick County: History Through Architecture; \u201cAfrican-American Historic Context of Clarke County, VA;\u201d \u201cDestination Middleburg, a Walking Tour Into the Past;\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>Clarke County, Virginia Images of America<\/em>.
