Lovettsville Girl Scout Troop 1434 earned their “Playing the Past” badge by visiting the Lovettsville Historical Society on Sunday, November 23, 2014. \u00a0The group of 5th graders\u00a0learned about daily life in the era before electricity, telephones and modern conveniences.<\/p>\n
The troop\u00a0looked at\u00a0photographs documenting Lovettsville’s many changes over the years, guessed at the use of various household and farm implements on display, and\u00a0admired the stitching of a handmade turn-of-the-last-century lady’s floor-length gown from the museum’s collection.<\/p>\n
Tom Bullock and Ed\u00a0Spannaus from the Lovettsville Historical Society hosted the girls, answered questions about artifacts, and provided the definitions of nineteenth-century\u00a0terms as “dry goods,” \u00a0“notions,” “staples,” “undertaker,” “millinery,” “barter,” and “livery.”<\/p>\n
Diverging from their usual meeting agenda of badge work and outdoor skills-building activities, the girls\u00a0had just come from their troop holiday party\u00a0where they had shared home-made, old-fashioned snacks and family recipes, and decorated their own Victorian-style hats with silk flowers and tulle.<\/p>\n
The Lovettsville Historical Society and Museum is open Saturdays 1:00-4:00 and also by appointment. The LHS is\u00a0committed to preserving and promoting the history and heritage of the Town of Lovettsville and the\u00a0surrounding area known as\u00a0“The German Settlement.” \u00a0Displayed are various artifacts, photographs, documentation,\u00a0household articles, tools, genealogy and other historical information pertaining to the local history within the\u00a0Lovettsville Museum.<\/p>\n
