The Lovettsville Museum has quite a few farm and household implements and tools from the 19th and early 20th centuries, which have been grouped together as a look-and-touch interactive display and guessing game\u00a0of “pre-digital era” technology, with answer cards attached.\u00a0 Many of the objects truly puzzle modern\u00a0kids, who love to learn how to make old-fashioned emojis ;-D on our 1913 typewriter :-O.<\/p>\n

For your consideration and puzzlement, presented here is one of the mystery objects in our exhibit.<\/p>\n

\nANSWER to the \u201cWhat the Heck IS This Thing #4?\u201d Game<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a vintage “Toledo Torch.”<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

A \u201cToledo Torch\u201d was a kerosene “road flare.”\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Starting in 1929, The Toledo Pressed Steel Co. manufactured millions of small, round kerosene-burning\u00a0 <\/span>torches<\/span> (sometimes called smudge pots<\/span>) that look like cartoon bombs<\/span>.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Toledo Torch\u00a0was widely used at road construction sites across the U.S., and other companies produced similar, competing devices.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Although they have long since been replaced by flaming pink road flares and\u00a0traffic barrels<\/span>, vintage smudge pots can still be found in attics, at flea markets, and on ebay<\/span>. <\/span><\/h3>\n
