For the past 30 years, Neil Hughes has lived in an 1819 house in the National Historic Landmark village of Waterford, Virginia — a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>remarkably well-preserved small town <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>located <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>between <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Lovettsville <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>and Leesburg. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>On June 10, 2018, Hughes will talk to the Lovettsville Historical Socie<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>y about his new <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>book <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>A Village in Time 1660-1990 \u00a0Discovering American History in a Small Virginia Quaker Village<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong>, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>which <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>grew out of his research into the people who built and lived in that very house and village.

In 1744, John Hough, the grandfather of Samuel Hough, who later built the house, left Bucks County, Pennsylvania and settled in what would become the town of Waterford, Virginia. Through the history of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>his ho<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>use,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>and the Hough<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>s, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Hollingsworth<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>s, and other<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>families, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Hughes examines significant historical events affecting every facet of an evolving portrait of America. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Hughes will trace the history of Waterford from its early settlement by Quakers from Pennsylvania, through the French-Indian and Revolutionary War<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, and the rise of the \u201cLoudoun System\u201d of agriculture and the triumph of the famed \u201cWaterford Flour.\u201d The Civil War brought <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>enormous<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> hardship to Waterford, with the town being occupied on a rotating basis by Union and Confederate soldiers. Waterford, along with Lovettsville, gave rise to the Independent Loudoun Rangers, the only organized Union military unit from present-day Virginia.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Looking at Waterford today, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>it might be hard to believe that it once had four taverns and a reputation as a \u201chard-drinking town.\u201d Or that with its mills, merchants, and manufactures, it was a largely-self sufficient town into the 1920s and 1930s.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Hughes will also explain how, after 100 years, Waterford lost its incorporated status in the 1930s, and how the efforts of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>its\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>citizens in the post-World War II period carried out the restoration and preservation of many of its crumbling homes, resulting in the village \u201cpreserved in time\u201d that we see today. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

The program will be held at St. James United Church of Christ, 10 East Broad Way, Lovettsville, VA<\/strong><\/span>,<\/a> at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are welcome<\/a> to defray expenses of the program and to support the activities of the Lovettsville Historical Society.
