A<\/span>lmost two decades before German settlers began streaming into Virginia\u2019s Loudoun Valley and the Shenandoah Valley, <\/span>the first organized settlement of Germans in Virginia was underway in the \u201cGermanna\u201d colony in the Piedmont, <\/span>along the road <\/span>between present-day Fredericksburg and Culpeper.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On Sunday, October 13, A<\/span><\/span>shley Abruzzo, <\/span><\/span>a <\/span><\/span>Germanna descendant, <\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>Germanna Foundation\u2019<\/span><\/span>s Membership Development Manager, will <\/span><\/span>present an overview of of the Germanna Colony’s history starting in 171<\/span><\/span>4<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>when Governor Alexander Spotswood <\/span><\/span>recruited a group of ironworkers from the Siegerland area of Westphalia, <\/span><\/span>who were of the German Reformed faith, to come to Virginia. <\/span><\/span> A second group, <\/span><\/span>Lutherans <\/span><\/span>from the Palatinate, arrived in 1717. Abruzzo <\/span><\/span>will discuss the<\/span><\/span>se<\/span><\/span> two regions <\/span><\/span>of Germany <\/span><\/span>where the first German immigrants came from, <\/span><\/span>and will tell about <\/span><\/span>stories of their indentured servitude, <\/span><\/span>and how they dispersed into other settlements in the Piedmont \u2013 particularly <\/span><\/span>into Madison and <\/span><\/span>Fauquier Count<\/span><\/span>ies<\/span><\/span> — and some eventually into the Valley of Virginia. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Abruzzo will also describe <\/span><\/span>how the Germanna Foundation was created, and <\/span><\/span>discuss <\/span><\/span>its present-day mission to preserve, protect, and educate <\/span><\/span>about<\/span><\/span> Virginia’s early German heritage. <\/span><\/span>She will tell <\/span><\/span>how the Germanna Foundation acquired some of the original land <\/span><\/span>on which <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>original <\/span><\/span>families settled, the quest to find the original 1714 fort <\/span><\/span>at Germanna<\/span><\/span>, and the progress the Foundation has made over the last few years. She will be available to answer questions after her presentation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Th<\/span>e<\/span> presentation will be held at St. James United Church of Christ, at 10 East Broad Way in Lovettsville (formerly the German Reformed Church, thought to have been founded in the early 1730s by the earliest German settlers in Loudoun County). <\/span><\/p>\n

The lecture is free and open to the public, but donations and are welcome to defray expenses of the program. <\/span><\/p>\n
