sans-serif;\">A<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">lmost two decades before German settlers began streaming into Virginia\u2019s Loudoun Valley and the Shenandoah Valley, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">the first organized settlement of Germans in Virginia was underway in the \u201cGermanna\u201d colony in the Piedmont, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">along the road <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">between present-day Fredericksburg and Culpeper.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">On Sunday, October 13, A<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">shley Abruzzo, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Germanna descendant, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Germanna Foundation\u2019<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">s Membership Development Manager, will <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">present an overview of of the Germanna Colony&#8217;s history starting in 171<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">4<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">when Governor Alexander Spotswood <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">recruited a group of ironworkers from the Siegerland area of Westphalia, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">who were of the German Reformed faith, to come to Virginia. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> A second group, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Lutherans <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">from the Palatinate, arrived in 1717. Abruzzo <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">will discuss the<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">se<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> two regions <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">of Germany <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">where the first German immigrants came from, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and will tell about <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">stories of their indentured servitude, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and how they dispersed into other settlements in the Piedmont \u2013 particularly <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">into Madison and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Fauquier Count<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ies<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> &#8212; and some eventually into the Valley of Virginia. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Abruzzo will also describe <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">how the Germanna Foundation was created, and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">discuss <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">its present-day mission to preserve, protect, and educate <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">about<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> Virginia&#8217;s early German heritage. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">She will tell <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">how the Germanna Foundation acquired some of the original land <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">on which <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">original <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">families settled, the quest to find the original 1714 fort <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">at Germanna<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Sans', Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, and the progress the Foundation has made over the last few years.
