Notable burials include Pvt. Samuel Timbers, who served the Union in the Civil War with the 29th Regiment of the U.S. Colored Infantry, and Henry Howard, an early Civil Rights leader who was a delegate to the 1883 Mass Meeting in Loudoun County. At the January 5 ceremony, speakers will discuss what is known about some of those intered there, and some of the history of the cemetery.

In April 2021, we held a clean-up where we were able to clear the section that has visible gravestones. We are now seeking assistance from the recently-formed Loudoun Cemetery Conservancy in restoring the existing markers and burial ground. Our long-term goal is to obtain access to the entire one-half acre of land so that we can conduct a search for additional burials, and restore the property as a place of dignity and respect for all those buried there.

Those planning on attending are urged to dress appropriately for cold weather and for walking on uneven ground. Remember that the graveyard has a lot of weeds and brush so sturdy footwear is important.

The cemetery is located at the intersection of Mountain and Britain Roads (State Routes 690 and 682). An adjacent street address is 13114 Mountain Road, Lovettsville, Va. 20180.

For further information, contact Claudette Bard at 410-615-7224, or Ed Spannaus at 540-822-9194.

Sunday, January 5, at 2:00 p.m. Mt.
