{"id":6752,"date":"2025-04-29T21:39:39","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T01:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/?p=6752"},"modified":"2025-04-29T21:39:40","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T01:39:40","slug":"next-in-the-lovettsville-historical-societys-2025-lecture-series-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/index.php\/next-in-the-lovettsville-historical-societys-2025-lecture-series-may\/","title":{"rendered":"Next in the Lovettsville Historical Society&#8217;s 2025 Lecture Series (May)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>The Overlooked Legacy of LaFayette\u2019s 1824-1825 Tour of America<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">P<strong>resented by Nancy Spannaus,\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Public Historian and Author<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><br><strong>Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><strong>St. James United Church of Christ,<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><strong>10 East Broad Way, Lovettsville&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August of 1824, General Gilbert Lafayette arrived in the United States for a tour as a \u201cguest of the nation.\u201d His visit coincided with the bitter election campaign of that year, which reflected the schisms that would ultimately lead to the Civil War.&nbsp; Yet&nbsp;during the course of&nbsp;his visit, Lafayette\u2019s own popularity as the last remaining general from the Revolutionary War united hundreds of thousands of Americans in honoring the&nbsp;General, and&nbsp;rekindled a spirit of national unity.<br><br>On the surface, the General studiously avoided expressing any preference for the four presidential candidates who were fighting for the presidency.&nbsp;Yet,&nbsp;could he really be neutral in this fight?&nbsp; The core issue dividing the contenders was the future of the American System of Economics, which President James Monroe had begun to implement after a long period of Jeffersonian sabotage of this outlook.<br><br>Lecturer Nancy Spannaus, author of two books on Hamilton\u2019s economics, will elaborate on the political context of this cliff-hanger election, and indications of Lafayette\u2019s role. But there\u2019s more: In researching for this talk, she uncovered some little-known aspects of Lafayette\u2019s legacy, which show just how important his influence was on the long-term development of our nation.
