{"id":823,"date":"1940-09-07T20:12:01","date_gmt":"1940-09-07T20:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/?p=823"},"modified":"2016-11-08T23:55:16","modified_gmt":"2016-11-08T23:55:16","slug":"farm-boy-tells-story-of-plane-crash-killing-25-chicago-daily-tribune-1940","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lovettsvillehistoricalsociety.org\/index.php\/farm-boy-tells-story-of-plane-crash-killing-25-chicago-daily-tribune-1940\/","title":{"rendered":"Farm Boy Tells Story of Plane Crash Killing 25 &#8211; Chicago Daily Tribune (1940)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Farm Boy Tells Story of Plane Crash Killing 25<\/h1>\n<h2>Testifies at Inquiry by Aeronautics Board<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Chicago Daily\u00a0Tribune, September 7, 1940, page 8<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Chicago Tribune Press Service<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington, D.C., September 6, 1940<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Warren McGaha, 13 years old, a Virginia farm boy, today gave the civil aeronautics board the most graphic account it has heard of last week&#8217;s airplane crash near Lovettsville, Virginia, which took 25 lives. \u00a0The board is investigating the crash of the Pennsylvania-Central Airliner which went down on a flight from Washington for Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>From such accounts of persons living near the scene of the tragedy, investigators hope to solve the mystery of the cause of the worst airplane disaster in the history of American aviation.<\/p>\n<p>Warren&#8217;s eyes glowed and his freckles stood out like polka dots as his face paled at recollection\u00a0of what he had seen. \u00a0Much too small to reach the microphone, he sat with his chin barely clearing the tabletop in front of him as he talked. \u00a0His nasal drawl was inaudible to all but a few of the several hundred spectators in the commerce department&#8217;s huge auditorium.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sees Plane From Porch<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was on the front porch of our house when the airplane went by,&#8221; he related. \u00a0&#8220;Then it wa&#8217;nt long &#8216;fore they was a streak o lightin and me and dad heared it fall.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Did the lighting stop at the plane, or did you see it on both sides of the plane?&#8221; he was asked.<\/p>\n<p>The boy thought a moment, then said: &#8220;Can&#8217;t tell &#8217;bout that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Did you hear anything when you saw the lightning?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Never heared nuttin&#8217;,&#8221; he replied. \u00a0&#8220;Nuttin&#8217; &#8216;cept thunder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Did you see anything else?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yup! \u00a0There was a cloud, a real black one, right in front o&#8217; the plane. \u00a0It was just then it began to go down, like this &#8212;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A sharp downward swing of his hand from a point over\u00a0his head showed the listeners more plainly than words the sudden plunge he recalled the plane had taken.<\/p>\n<p><em>Others Tell Similar Story<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Substantially the same story was told by other witnesses, including several other Virginia farmers and their women folks. \u00a0They agreed that the crash occurred after a flash of lightning when the plane was heading into a black storm cloud. \u00a0No rain was falling at the time, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier the investigators heard James H.
