The Impacts of the American Revolution in Loudoun and Beyond
Sunday, July 12, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
St. James UCC Church, 10 East Broad Way, Lovettsville VA
The Lovettsville Historical Society will again be offering a summer seminar program on Sunday July 12th at 2:00 p.m. at St. James United Church of Christ at 10 East Broad Street, Lovettsville. This year—our 50th anniversary as an historical society and the 250th of the American Revolution and our Declaration of Independence, our board has chosen to zero in on the American Revolution a second time, focusing this year on the varied impacts of the Revolution.
As with our previous seminars, we’ll use a moderator to introduce the topic, a panel to grapple with it, and end with a chance for our audience to tackle the questions raised as well.
Our panelists this year will be:
- Travis Shaw, the Director of Education at the Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area and a Revolutionary War re-enactor;
- Alicia Cohen of the Loudoun Black History Committee, who has been zeroing in on loyalists during the year;
- Bill Wilkin, a retired Loudoun County Public Schools history educator who has offered a series of lectures on the military history of the American Revolution this year;
- Tracy Gillespie, a longtime history educator with NOVA Parks who’s been examining the role of women in Virginia and locally during the Revolution;
- Mike Zapf, Lovettsville Historical Society Secretary who has been playing with Germans and the American Revolution; and
- Ed Spannaus, our Lovettsville Historical Society Vice President and longtime researcher of everything Lovettsville.
The moderator for the seminar will be:
- Rich Gillespie, veteran history educator from Loudoun Valley High School and the Historian Emeritus of the Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area.
All serve on the Loudoun VA250 Committee.
Our seminar programs are two hours long and include a break in the middle for light refreshments and it makes for a social and intellectually engaging Sunday afternoon. Please put this on your calendar!
