The Lovettsville Historical Society and Museum will once again be offering a fall mini-course in the field this spring, offered on sequential Monday nights in May, from May 4th-May 25th (Memorial Day). Entitled The German Settlement II: The American Revolution in the German Settlement the four-session field trip-based course will strive to better familiarize local residents with the history, artifacts, stories, and key historic sites of their neighborhood. This year—Part II of the course, offers four chronologically sequential field trips diving more deeply into local history topics of high interest, and can be taken whether or not you took The German Settlement I. Conceived and co-taught by Lovettsville Historical Society Board members Rich Gillespie, Ed Spannaus, and Mike Zapf with help from other “in the know” local historians, sessions of the class will be partly in Lovettsville, partly on the road exploring the greater Lovettsville area known as “the German Settlement” at this critical time in American History. A proper way to celebrate and learn about the 250! The fun is in the story-telling on location!
The topics this year for German Settlement II will be wholly VA250 relevant:
Session 1: Loudoun confronts the American Revolution—a walking tour of Leesburg
Session 2: The German Settlement and the American Revolution
Session 3: Differing Ways other Western Loudouners Grappled with the American
Revolution—we visit Ketoctin Church & Goose Creek Friends Meeting
Session 4: When Loudoun Saw the Soldiers—Living Historian Travis Shaw and a trip to
Noland’s Ferry where the military passed in to Loudoun
The four sessions are sold only as a package. To register for the class, use the PayPal link below. The cost of the class is $50.00 and will be used to help fund the Lovettsville Museum’s upcoming physical expansion.
To keep the class intimate and allow for sensible caravanning, we limit the class to 30 people who will meet starting Monday night May 4th at 6:30. p.m. Starting places for each session vary. Please consider joining us, delve into our local history, and meet some new friends!
Note: Part of the reason this class is so inexpensive is that we generally caravan when we need to visit places beyond the museum, which we do each session.
